As I write this, Russia has invaded Ukraine. adding to the misery, fear and uncertainty that’s been part of our lives all over the world.
In my beloved but beleaguered home state, Florida’s governor has championed legislation attacking LGBTQ, women’s reproductive rights and voter rights.
Life is tough now. I send you strength and courage.
Strength and courage was the family maxim for Janet Reno and her sister Maggy Hurchalla. You know Janet Reno as U.S. Attorney General. You may not know Maggy, who was one of the Everglades’ most passionate advocates. They were all that as well as my grownup friends when I was little. They instilled in me a love and appreciation for Florida’s wild and natural beauty. They never treated me like a child, never coddled but always encouraged. They were fearless and sunny even when they had no right to be. They were and are my sheroes.
South Florida is fertile soil for sheroes. I’m so excited and proud President Biden has nominated Miami’s own Ketanji Brown Jackson for the Supreme Court. I believe she’ll do this whole country proud.
She can’t do it alone. At this challenging time, we can all be heroes and sheroes. Call out repression. Nourish and protect your community.
