I have a new mop head! I texted my friend, all excited, when it arrived, then I thought, Wow — how low the bar for joy became in the Year of Covid. And yet, this past year reminded me even the small wins count, and we need to be grateful for them. Making it through 2020 is a big win, so good on you.
What was your takeaway from 2020? I’d love to hear from you.
The scourges that marked 2020 won’t vanish like magic any more than you can wish away a hangover. We are living in a historic time. No one said it would be fun, and it isn’t. Covid has killed 1.8 million people to date — parents, children, husbands, wives, friends. We have to honor them. We have to learn from this. We have to do better.
Join me in welcoming 2021.
Let’s make it a kind and conscious year.
Follow Covid protocols. You know the drill — stay six feet apart from others, mask up, wash your hands.
Covid has made the already at risk even more so. Hunger rates are up, affecting one out of every six of us. We need to support — and feed — each other. I was glad to be able to feature Food Rescue US in Huffington Post Be part of the rescue.
We need to work for a safer, more sustainable future. You can do it and treat yourself right, too. Pledge to go vegan with Veganuary. It’s free, it’s easy, and you get daily tips, affirmations and recipes from some of your favorite vegans.
We have a lot to look forward to in this fresh, new year.
We’ll have a new president, Covid vaccines are rolling out, and I’ve been cooking up some things:
Grow your own sprouts! Tell ‘em I sent ya. I’m excited to be a Fullei Fresh affiliate. I’ve been a big fan of their bean and green sprouts. They’re nutrient-dense, fluffy and fun. Fullei Fresh now offers DIY sprouting kits. Grow your own sprouts — it’s body-supporting, sustainable and the easiest thing you can do during lockdown. Order up your DIY sprout kits and use the affiliate code soulfulvegan.
Look for Fullei Fresh recipe book and my DIY sprout video later this month. In the meantime, here’s a cooking video with me preparing a winter sprout salad at beautiful Miami Beach Botanical Garden. The breeze blowing up my skirt was NOT in the script.
More “Fresh from the Garden” cooking videos in the works, with kudos to producer/director Michael Todd.
Look for my work in two new anthologies:
The VegNews Guide to Being a Fabulous Vegan, edited by Jasmin Singer with contributions by some of your favorite vegans, including me.
What I Do to Get Through, edited by James Whithey and Olivia Sagan.
Wishing you a happy, healthy 2021,
full of little things that bring you joy, like this wild peacock who's been gracing our neighborhood.
January 1 New Year’s Day — a big, wet kiss (through a face mask) for 2021, plus my recipe for hopping john, traditionally eaten New Year’s Day to bring good luck. It didn’t work for 2020, but I have high hopes for 2021.
January 18 Martin Luther King Day —Black Lives Matter. Black lives always matter. Today is about more than a slogan. It’s about creating an equitable future. As Dr. King said, “We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back.” Together, let’s make Martin Luther King Jr’s dream of freedom, of justice, a reality.
