Broccoli Rising and a Balancing Act
Welcome new Broccoli Rising subscribers! Welcome back, fabulous readers! I’m grateful for you all.
It’s 2024! Now what?
What do you want for this shining new year?
Here’s a sampling of items on my To Do list:
Finding a peaceful end to two wars
Rebuilding and supporting war-torn countries
Averting catastrophic climate change
Restoring women’s right to abortion
Restoring voter rights
Abolishing hate crimes, be it racism, antisemitism or anti-LGTBQ
Tall list.
With so much that needs doing, It’s easy to get overambitious. Or overwhelmed. New Year’s resolutions should gently push you forward, not push you down. Keeping your focus sets you up for success.
In dance, focus is called spotting. Keeping your eyes on a fixed spot as you spin helps you keep your balance. Otherwise, you wobble, then you fall. Balance, the metaphorical kind, is a lesson I have to relearn each new year. Because I suck at it.
Wanting to help the world is a noble aspiration, but how do you actually do it? Start by nourishing yourself emotionally and physically so you have enough energy to keep going.
And you’re in luck. The new year kicks off with Veganuary. Now in its 10th phenomenal year, Veganuary offers you a whole month of daily support and all resources and fun you need to achieve your goal.
A vegan diet not only fuels you and makes your mouth happy, there’s no surer remedy for the planet and all the creatures on it — including you.
You wanna address climate change? A vegan diet reduces greenhouse gases, land and water consumption and ups biodiversity.
If you care about social justice issues, choosing vegan checks all the boxes.
Wellness is still the main reason people choose vegan, and study after study link a plantbased diet with improved health outcomes.
Every reason is good. Whatever your motivation, Veganuary can help you. So can I. I’m cheering you on all the way. I want to be a resource, whether you want vegan recipes, a good story, practical advice, someone to vent to or tell you you can do it. Because you can.
January 2024
January 15 Martin Luther King Day
January 26 National Peanut Butter Day
Let’s make the most of 2024 — it’s a leap year, giving us a bonus day. I’ll get you started with a new recipe for a new year — vegan of course, and cozy and brunchworthy too.
Dutch Baby
Think of a Dutch baby as the love child of a frittata and a pancake. There’s no baby involved, and in this vegan version, no eggs, either. Extra firm tofu makes a great substitute, great enough even to make my tofu-wary husband a true believer. I hope it does the same for you.
It’s a perfect brunch dish and also makes a nice lunch entrée. Pairs well with almost any kind of salad.
